National Allotment Week
Led by the National Allotment Society, National Allotment Week raises awareness of the many benefits of allotments, from growing your own food and learning new skills to improving wellbeing and building community connections.
This year’s theme is ‘Grow to Learn’, highlighting the educational, personal development and wellbeing benefits of spending time on an allotment.
Benefits of allotments:
- Boost wellbeing – Reduce stress, improve mood and connect with nature.
- Get active – Gardening provides opportunities to build strength and cardiovascular fitness.
- Learn new skills – Spend time outdoors while developing practical skills.
- Build connections – Meet others, socialise and become part of a community.
- Live more sustainably – Grow fresh food and develop healthy habits.
Don’t have an allotment? A garden or local green space can still provide many of the same benefits. So get outside, get growing and enjoy the positive effects!
3 – 9 August
Cook a meal for someone you care about
Sharing a homemade meal is a simple way to show someone you care. Cooking together or eating together can strengthen relationships, create lasting memories and make healthy eating even more enjoyable.
3 ideas to get started
Plan a meal they’ll love
It doesn’t have to be a three-course feast. Choose a simple recipe you know they’ll enjoy and that you’ll have fun preparing.
Make the most of wholesome ingredients
Use good-quality, everyday ingredients where you can. Check what’s already in your cupboards, and freeze any leftovers to reduce food waste.
Set a date and enjoy the occasion
Life gets busy, so arrange a time that suits you both. Put your phones away, enjoy the food and make time for conversation.
