A couple practicing handstands against a wall

The October Handstand Challenge

October may be known as a SCARY month because of Halloween, but this month’s challenge might be a little scary too!

This month’s challenge: Learn to do a handstand

WHAT??? You may be saying to yourself!

Don’t worry — the aim isn’t necessarily to master a perfect handstand in 31 days. Instead, it’s about practising, building strength and seeing how far you can progress.

A handstand is a great all-round calisthenic exercise that can help develop:

  • Upper-body and shoulder strength
  • Core control and body awareness
  • Balance and coordination
  • Concentration and focus
  • Confidence as you learn a new skill

There are plenty of guides and videos online to help you learn, so find something that suits your current ability. The main components of learning a handstand include:

  • Wrist and shoulder preparation
  • Body shape and core tension
  • The kick-up
  • Balance
  • Learning to come down safely

Start at a level that feels appropriate for you. You could begin with simple strength and balance exercises, practise against a wall, or work towards holding a handstand for just a few seconds.

So, where will you be by day 31? Maybe take a photo or keep a simple diary of your practice and see what 31 days of progress can do!

And will the kids show us how it’s done?!

Handstands aren’t suitable for everyone and carry a risk of falls or injury. Practise in a clear, safe space and consider getting guidance from a suitably qualified professional, particularly if you’re new to this type of exercise or have any existing health concerns.
