Hike in July

If you enjoyed taking part in National Walking Month, why not take it one step further? This month’s challenge is to Hike in July. Whether it’s your first trail or you’re a regular hill walker, hiking is a fantastic way to improve your fitness, explore new places and spend time outdoors.

Hiking is great for both the mind and body:

  • Strengthens your legs and core
  • Improves balance
  • Boosts mental wellbeing
  • Helps you disconnect from screens and spend time in nature

What’s the difference between a walk and a hike?

Walking is usually a shorter, more casual activity on paved or well-maintained paths. Hiking generally involves longer distances on natural, uneven terrain and often includes hills or more challenging conditions.

So where can you hike

  • Coastal paths
  • Forest and woodland trails
  • National parks
  • Hills and moorland
  • Waterfall trails
  • Canal towpaths (great for beginners)
  • Country parks

Can’t find anywhere nearby that takes your fancy? Try the ‘3 Hour Rule’. Pick a distance that you’re willing to drive – say 1 – 3 hours – and search within that radius for your perfect hike.
